A Deep Plunge V Neck Dress Pattern That Will Get All The Compliments

It's time to get your party on! We've created this mini dress sewing pattern that's perfect for cocktail parties and other events where you want to look your best. Let me show you how to sew up a deep v neck dress!

You'll need:

  • Your Poppy Long Sleeves Dress Pattern
  • Preferred fabric
  • Color matching thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Interlining for waist
  • Lining
  • Reinforcement tape
  • 1 invisible zipper
  • elastic 1 cm wide

Seam Allowance:

  • 1.4 cm hem (double turned hem)
  • 1 cm for all seams

The pattern is designed for mid weight fabrics, like stretch satin or stretch taffeta. And that's what we did when making our sample-we used stretch taffeta woven fabric, but we think satin would make an equally beautiful dress



Sewing Instructions

Sewing A Deep V Neck Dress Pattern - Instructions

We know you're probably nervous about getting started, but don't worry-we've got your back! We'll take you through every step of the process and make sure you have everything you need to get started. You'll be sewing like a pro in no time! Let's get sewing!

Sewing the bust

Apply the fusible interlining on the front waistband and back waistband (5+7).

Apply fusible interlining tape on the front and back neckline and center back, on the lining pieces (pieces 2 and 3) fig 1

Sew the front lining darts and press them facing down

Gather the bottom of the front bodice from the center to the middle notch: Sew one row of gathers at 0.5 cm and the second row at 1.5 cm. Leave long tails of thread for gathering.Gently pull on the two ends of the thread on the wrong side—the fabric will gather along the thread. Match the gathering with the notches on the front waisttband piece (center front notch and the quarter notch). Secure the threads at the one end to prevent the stitches from pulling out. fig 2

Sew the shoulder seams and side seams using a 1 cm seam allowance. Press the seam toward the back, and neaten the seam using a 3-thread serger stitch. The same is done with the lining.

Place the lining bodice to the fabric bodice, right side to right side, taking care to match the notches. Sew together around the neck edge using a 1 cm seam allowance. fig3 Press the seam orienting the seam allowance towards the lining and sew a topstitch at 1-2mm from the edge, including the lining and the seam allowance in the seam.

Sew the sides of the front waistband with the back waistband pieces and press the seams open. proceed the same with the lining waistband pieces.

Place the bodice between the waistband and the waistband lining according to the notches and sew using a 1 cm seam allowance. Press the seam orienting the seam allowance towards the facing and sew a topstitch at 1-2mm on the waistband lining, including the lining and the seam allowance in the seam.

Topstitch the bottom of the waistband with the waistband lining at 0.5 cm from the edge. fig 4

Overlock the center back edges of the bust

Sewing the skirt

Overlock the center back of the skirt pieces (piece 8 and 9). Sew the darts of the skirt pieces and press them towards the sides. Sew the center back seam of the skirt, right sides together, from the notch down and press the seam open. fig 5

Overlock the hem of the skirt. Turn the hem of the skirt up 1.4 cm to the wrong side and sew at 1.3 cm. Press the hem Form the side pleats on the skirt (piece 9) according to the pattern marks and topstitch them at 0.5 cm from the raw edge. fig 6

Place the pleats in the V opening on the left side of the skirt and sew at 1cm , closing the V (like a sandwich). Press the seam and overlock. fig 7

Sew the bodice with the skirt on the waist line, placing them right sides together and sew using a 1 cm seam allowance. press the seam and overlock. fig 8

Sewing the zipper

Apply a strip of fusible interlining tape on the wrong side of both center back seam allowances to match the zipper placement.

Pin the zipper in place on the left side of the garment, right sides together. Undo the zipper and sew using a concealed zipper foot. fig 9

Zip up the zipper. Pin the other side of the zipper in place on the right side. Undo the zipper and sew in place using a concealed zipper foot. Press the zipper seam gently. Turn inwards the zipper caps and topstich 0.5 cm from the top to keep in place. fig 10

Sewing the sleeve

Sew the side seam of the sleeve (piece 7). Press and overlock the seam. fig 11

Take the sleeve and sew one row of gathers at 0.5 cm and the second row at 1.5 cm on the bottom part. Sew at a great pace and leave long tails of thread for gathering. fig 12

Sewing Instructions Illustrations 12 & 13

Take the sleeve cuff elastic channel piece and iron it in half, lengthwise. Sew together the short ends, right side to right side, using a 1 cm seam allowance. Press the seam open.

Sew at 0.5 the raw edges of the cuff elastic channel, lengthwise, wrong sides together, leaving 3-4 cm open to insert the elastic. Then place the bottom of the sleeve that is going to be gathered to the cuff elastic channel piece, side to right side, raw edges aligned. Afterwards, gently pull on the two ends of the thread on the wrong side—the fabric will gather along the thread. fig 13

When all the gathers are in place, sew the sleeve and cuff together, using a 1 cm seam allowance and leaving 3-4 cm open to insert the elastic. Press the seam gently. Insert the elastic and close the 3-4 cm left open. Overlock the seam.

Between the sleeve notches, insert two rows of gather stitches, one row at 0.5 cm from the raw edge and the second row at 1.5 cm. Sew at a great pace; fig 14

Place the sleeve into the armhole, right side to right side. Match the notches and the underarm seams. Pull up the gathers to make the sleeve head fit the armhole. Pin from the sleeve side. Sew the sleeve in the armhole at 1 cm from the raw edge. press gently and remove the second gather stitch. Overlock the seam
